60 Minuets on Guns

Waiting on the gun story on 60 Minuets. I am expecting this to be another hatchet job but we will see. . . . Delayed due to golf.

OK, they are looking at why the gun and ammo sales are doing so well in a recession. . .

starts off with the deadly shooting we have been having. Then moved on to stock on gun makes going up 4x since September. Sales are up all over.

Gun show, says they will sell thousands of guns over a weekend. Nancy (from 60 min) walked around the gun show with a pro gun "gun lobby" rep. Did mention that they are doing background checks at the show and lots of them. Also mentioned prices are up. The gun guy says the price is up due to bad economy and folks wanting a gun as insurance to protect themselves if the economy fails.

Also shows an add about Second Amendment - ad insinuates that you need to get your gun now before they are banned - and how folks are buying guns due to Obama and fear of gun bans. Fear of Obama is blamed for an ammo shortage. Asked if gun dealers are whipping up fear, said no, politics did it for them - people see what may be coming so they are getting guns and ammo now while they can.

Did point out that any private seller can sell a gun without the check. Private sales don't need background check. Talking about Virginia Tech again. Got the VT students on camera saying that we need to close the "gun show loophole". One was a victim the other a family member of a victim that died. Brought out the same family member from the VT shooting that was on the Friday 20/20 show. Told how he bought guns without an ID.

At least they have the gun lobby as they call it there to give the other side of the story. They brought up that students should be able to have guns. Discussed how Choe shot himself as soon as the cops showed up. Asked them what kind of difference would have been made if a student had challenged him. 60 min said you may get a bunch of armed Choe's if students are armed - Pro gun guy says ya but you will have plenty of other students to stop him. Reporter says they are kids, he replies who is in Iraq and Afghanistan now fighting for us?

Played up how the VT folks lost to the gun lobby and did not pass the law to close the "loophole" in VA.

Started to bring up the Mexico side of things too. Then started to list off all the recent shootings and tried to tie it to the AWB being over.

Got Diann Finstine on to push how bad assault weapons are. She claims that gangs, and bad guys are all using assault weapons. Showed Congress #2 democrat saying that gun control laws are a hassle and no one wants to stick out their necks on this. That they use to talk alot about it but now no one will stick out his neck

Pro gun guy told how even though the Dems now run Congress they have much more pro gun folks in congress. Tells how they tossed anti gun Republicans and put in pro gun Democrats. Finstine says the NRA has a strangle hold on congress. She says no one told her to back off the AWB.

Also brought up how the White house does not want to deal with the AWB now due to the diversion. Finstine says she will pick the time and place to bring it up again.

They (Nancy from 60 Min) admit 60% in 2000 is now down to 49% that favor stricter gun laws. They admit that gun laws are loosing the backing of the people. The support is continuing to go down.

Overall not a bad report for 60 minutes. . .

I had pretty much the same assessment. They parroted a few anti-gun talking points and worked on the sympathy angle with the VT victims, but they gave the pro-gun side a voice too. Overall it slanted anti-gun but was about as balanced as you can expect from a patently anti-gun MSM outlet.
