How I became a gun nut
I started shooting as a kid in probably 5th or 6th grade when dad got me an air rifle, one that you could pump up to 10 time to get some real power out of. I had a great time in the yard with that. Also took out a few squirrels that had been getting in the attic too. . . It was a lot of fun to shoot, rather accurate and a number of old plastic models met there end sitting on a stump to that gun. . .
In Boy Scouts my scout master was very pro 2A and took us all out shooting a few times with .22s. I even managed to earn the Rifle and Shotgun merit badge at summer camp.
After my Granddad passed I got his gun collection and my dad gave me his two rifles. I had just got my FID and this gave me a 22 and a few other things to shoot. For years that was all I had, and it seemed enough.
Fast forward a few years and I had joined a gun range shortly after getting married. Still had the same small collection of arms but it worked for the moment. When I got laid off from work I got plenty of warning so had another job lined up. This let me take the bit of severance I go and buy my first evil assault rifle, a WASA 10 and it was great. I started to look at cowboy shooting and that lead me to finally get a lever action I always wanted. . . . Next thing I know I am actually putting away a gun fund and thinking about the next purchase. . . .
About this time I discovered Blogs through Law Dog. From there I found JayG’s blog and started to really get sucked into the gun blogger world. Then I went to my first blogger shoot (Thanks JayG!). . . . and spent the day surrounded by these great folks, all armed, and all with all sorts of fun stuff to shoot. This got me really interested in the carry movement. I already had a carry permit but didn’t carry.
Well, I have to say that getting into the gunny movement has done a lot to make me a better person, at least I think so. As I got more and more into being a gun nut I realized how gun rights fit into all of our rights. It changed my view on a number of things like gay rights for example. I slowly shifted to seeing any limitation on gay rights as a limitation on rights period. I became more and more wrapped up in looking at what the Constitution actually said vs what the government was doing. And I became more of an independent Libertarian than anything else. . . .
In the end I became a gun nut, I now carry often, have purchased a number of guns myself, taught my kids to shoot and still keep thinking of what I want to get next. . . . I have also found I am much more interested in politics and where my town, state and country are going. I have found that being a gun nut pushes most people into being a patriot nut too and that is a good thing.
Every gun nut I have met has been a great person to know, friendly , eager to share their knowledge and let you try their guns. They are quick witted and smart, love their country, and are eager to help make it a better place if they can . . . almost the exact opposite of what the left portrays them as. . . funny how wrong the left is about these things.
My name is JD and I am a gun nut. . . .

Sig Saur Visit – Northeast Gun Blogger Dinner
The day started at the Sig Saur Academy . My understanding is Sig is looking to make contact with some Bloggers to help get the word out about their products and training area. We were met by George Harris the Director of Training. George was nice enough to give us a tour of the training area and explain the different training classes they offered.
On our tour of the grounds we got to see a number of ranges that they use for training both civilians and police/military folks. They have a great set up for training on anything from close quarters pistol and civilian defensive pistol up to a 300 yrd range for long range rifle training. We ended the tour at one of the new classrooms they have put int.
At the classroom we got a nice bunch of gifts from them – a hat, pocket knife, and info on the classes they offer. We then were given a certificate for ½ off a class so we can come back and experience how they actually teach a class here. They then gave us a nice overview of some of the guns they make. Even got to handle them! = ) We got to handle pistols and rifles that are both current productions, and one or two that they will be showing off at the Shoot Show. I will post the links to other bloggers who were getting photos of everything. This went over well with the bloggers but got me in a bit of trouble with my wife who was also at the event. But in a good way – She is a small woman and hard to find a pistol she could hold well. . . until now. They passed around a Sig 238 and she loved it! I guess I will be starting another gun fund and looking for one now. . . .
The last stop was at the Pro Shop at the Academy. There you could get almost anything you could want for your Sig, or get one for yourself. Had I owned one my credit card would have been in trouble. As it is I think I am in trouble when it comes to the classes.
George went over some of the practice guns they had there to fit one to my wife’s small hands. After she went over the problems she has had with my pistols and how the 238 was the first gun that fit her well we discussed what class would be good for a starter like her. He was quick to recommend that she take a course with his wife, who also is a small woman so would be able to help her from firsthand experience. I was very impressed by this since I have met many teachers who’s ego would not let them admit another teacher may be better for the student. This sealed it for me that we will get up here for classes. They not only say that they put the student first, they proved it to me. George has impressed me with both his knowledge and his ease of teaching, he does not strike me as one of those “drill sergeant” types. He seems very easy going and very willing to make sure the students learn as much as they can in the classes there and if he is like that I am sure his faculty is as well.
We then moved the meet to Jillian’s in Manchester where we met up with a number of other bloggers who could not make the tour. We even got lucky enough to have a number of the Sig folks join us. While at the dinner My wife and I got to talk with George and his wife Linda who is an instructor at Sig. We had a great time talking with them and this further convinced me of the quality and caliber of the instructors there. My wife had a great time talking to Linda and we both feel we learned a lot about the classes from them and agreed that we should attend a couple. I think we will be looking into a few courses come the warm weather.
The dinner and conversation at Jillian’s was great as usual with the gun bloggers I have met. As Jay is quick to point out we have a bunch of armed folks together, no one got hurt, no problems, and everyone had a good time. Once again the presence of guns owned by law abiding citizens did not lead to the blood in the streets the media said it would. A great time was had by all; we swapped stories and ate good food while enjoying the company and the football on the TV. Later some went on to play pool but due to the late hour my wife and I headed home.
Just so there are no questions and we have full disclosure, we did not pay for the tour, and Sig did give us some swag and a certificate for a half price class for our time. And yes, I do plan on taking them up on the offer and then some. . . . with a bit of luck and warm weather = )
I will update the blog as others post on the event with links to their blogs. . .

Assault Weapon Bans,. . .NOT
I won't even start on the fact that what the law calls an AW is not an AW, never was and never will be . . .. it just looks like one and scares the sheep.
To show how useless this law is this person has gone and made a rifle that will fire the same stuff the AR-15 shoots, uses the same barrel, and upper, but is legal in CA. It is all about looks folks. Nothing to do with facts or reality. All he did was remove the cosmetic stuff the sheep don't like and he now has his AR-15 it just looks a little different.
Another win for the good guys. . .

More guns in the hands of free men
Found at The War on Guns. . . we added 1,000,000 guns to the hands of private citizens last month alone. Sounds like folks continue to back the Second Amendment with their wallets.
What are we buying?
From the report:
The bulk of the buying has been concentrated on the following types of guns or calibers:
Semi Auto Handguns
Revolvers
Ar15s and all variants of the Black Rifle
.50 Caliber
Good for us all. Folks are taking an interest in self defense in a big way.

Scituate Gun Club
The folks that have been pushing to close Scituate Rod and Gun have finally admitted it. They have been saying for about a year now that they don't want to shut us down, just make sure the range is safe.
Now that they have lost the zoning appeal in town they are showing their real goal - suing to have us closed for good. They claim that the gun club has not been a gun club for it's whole existence and that the change to shooting rifles and pistols was not OK'd by the town so we should be closed. Too bad members that have shot here for 20, 30 or more years disagree with them.
So we are still in court, our range has been declared safe by the NRA and now we are going for a second opinion so we can go back to the courts to lift our injunction against use. Until then it is shotgun only and I guess I will have to look for a second club to join to keep up my pistol and rifle practice.
Here is to hoping that we are open soon, and a big BLEEP BLEEP to the folks trying to close us down. You don't like us then move back to BOSTON.
Once again the liberals have shown that they only care for themselves and nothing for the rest of the folks in town or the area. Remember, the club had been there a good 40 years or more before you or your house. You should have done your homework before buying and the town should not have let you build. Neither of these is the fault of the gun club. Grow up and deal with it.

Skeet Shooting. . . ..
the new (to me) 12 gauge worked great. I got maybe 50% hits or so. They took it easy on me and I didn't have to shoot doubles as I was new. They guys at Scituate were great and gave me lots of good pointers. I will definitely do it again.
My oldest gave it a good go but we did not have a small enough gun for her. She needs a really short stock so she can hold it right. She handled the 20 ga ok, but didn't hit anything. She was getting close towards the end though.
I think we will try it again in a few week and see what we can do.

Skeet Shooting Anyone?
Anyway so I have been looking for shot in the 9 to 11 range as the club told me and no go. I also think I need non-lead for our range so that was a no go too. . . anyway they sell some there so I guess for the first trip I will buy from them and find out what I need and where to get it.
Should be a good day - I know I am looking forward to it. . . . .
Also, while looking for shot I ran across BB shot for home defense??? Has anyone heard of this stuff?? For home defence I was thinking more like 00 Buck. . ..

New Shooter
Things went well and I think we have another convert to the dark side = )
He is thinking about getting his permit so wanted to try it again.
The day started with a .22 rifle so he could get use to shooting, we could go over the four rules, how to hold the gun, how to sight it and all that good stuff. He did well with the .22 but had remembered doing more pistol shooting than rifle way back when so wanted to try that. I got him set up with a .22 pistol and he did ok. He did remark that it was much easier to shoot the rifle accurately.
We went through the pistols, .380, 9mm, and a .32 for him to try that we had. He did ok, but did not like the .380 as much as the 9mm. It was all about how it fit his hand. We then discussed how if he wants to get a pistol when the time comes it is important to go to a good shop that will let him handle the guns and see what fits his hand.
We then went back to rifles where we did a .45 lever action, a WASR 10 and AR-15. He did best with the AR, then the lever gun. He was not a big fan of the AK with the kick to it. I couldn't get him to try the Enfield. . . I did shoot it first so he could get an idea of the kick so as to not scare him and he chose not to try it. . . . maybe next time. . .
At this point another shooter came by who like my AR and was talking about getting one. I let him give it a try and discussed things a bit with him on it. I found out he was "former" Marine (if there is such a thing as a former one. . .) and it had been like 20 years since he shot an AR type rifle but he did well with it. Afterwards I noted this to the new guy as to how most gunnys I have met are very friendly and if you show an interest in one of their guns and ask nice most are happy to have you try it and talk about them. They are also a good source of info on things they have liked and disliked with their guns and such. . .
All in all a good day. The new shooter had a good time and got to see that us gun folks are a friendly lot. Now to see if we can get him to go for his permit. . ..

Shooting in New York
Oh ya, gun control only means you are disarmed when the bad guy shows up. . . .
So now we have 13 or so dead so that the left can feel good about gun control instead of dead bad guys because someone there had a gun to fight back. . . .
The gun control crowd should be ashamed of themselves. The should beg forgiveness from the families of those killed and injured there because it is as much their fault as the gunman's. They made sure folks can't fight back. . . .
What ever happened to their cries of "If it can save just one life it is worth it!"? Based on that we should be looking at gun control as a distant bad memory. . .
Heck, even Canada is looking to drop their gun registry after admitting it is a money sink that did not help them catch any bad guys. . . .
When will we learn. . . .

New Carry Gun part 2
So since I have time I have been all over the net looking and reading reviews on the Para LDA, S&W M&P, and a bit on Glocks. I have also read a bit on the generic 1911 comments for carry.
I am a bit concerned about the double hammer idea on the Para LDA. Seems there is an internal and external hammer on it. . . will have to go see one. Caleb at Gun Nuts Media likes them so that is in the + column for me but I need to handle the gun to see if it will fit my hand. . .
I like the idea of a Glock but I would have to get a used 17 or 19 or such. The plus here is the possibility I can get Hi Cap mags for it.
I am leaning towards the M&P though in 9mm. Seems the 9 is a bit cheaper to shoot and I don't see any reports of a huge difference in stopping power if you can aim. . . . I don't mind that it is not Hi Cap here in MA as it would be a new gun and I can get a couple of mags free from S&W with the purchase right now. . . . It is also about $500 for a new one so I may be able to pick up one of these and a used shot gun for the house too. . . .
Then to top it all off I have been wanting a 1911 for a while now. Just the history and background of the gun and the .45 cal gets my attention. I will get one, just not sure if now is the time. . . .
I am planning a road trip up to Four Seasons this Saturday to go pick their brains on what they have and handle a few of the guns. I expect to get one Saturday and maybe a holster for it too. . .
I will post pics of what I get. . .
Then I will have to beg some range time from a friend or two local to me so I can get in some trigger time with it. . . .
Should be a good weekend for me = )

New Carry Gun
After looking at the cost of ammo I think I may have to pass on a .45 and go for a 9mm. at about $5 a box less for ammo it will be a lot easier to practice with. . .
so I am going to hit the gun shop this weekend and see how they fit my hand. I may go for a Glock or a S&W M&P. we will see . . .
So many choices, so little money. . . the eternal gun geek problem = )

Sensory Overload
Total overload. I am a newbie at this so I guess it will take practice but man, so much info and fun packed into one hour. . . I could barely handle it. . . . We will try again next week. If you are going to overload on input may as well have fun when you do it!

Gun Club still closed
On the bad news front it looks like the nice folks that moved into the neighborhood want us closed down permanently. I bet they have been waiting for a shot at this for a long time. I don’t think they can legally do it but you never know in Mass. . .
I still want to know how they can justify this crap. You move into my town and now I am supposed to change everything to make you happy? WTF?
Folks, you bought your house fully knowing there is a gun club near it – If you didn’t then go sue your Realtor as the gun club has been there since the 1920’s or so, long before your house was . . . How they hell you get any rights to shut it down is beyond me. You don’t like the club well no one made you buy the house there. Move. You came second, deal with it.
In a nutshell they want damages for trespass, assault and nuisance. They also want an injunction to keep us closed. I want to know, can members of the club sue them for the loss of range time? Wouldn’t that be great? You pay for a membership but you can’t use it because these folks are preventing it. I would love to see them (the neighbors) have to pay us back our dues since the membership is useless because of their actions. . . . . . I know, but it is a nice dream. Since this is MA these people may actually win no matter what the law is so I guess I need to start looking for another range to use this summer. . .
And for the record I still have not heard of any proof that any of the bullets they claim stuck house came from the club. For all we know folks are out in the woods shooting that should not be and they hit the house if in fact any really were hit.
They claim to have the bullet, and I believe the one guy using that size gun offered to have it tested and then all that went quiet. Maybe they know the bullet did not come from the club . . .
We will see. . . .

You do what WE SAY newbie
It goes on to discuss how folks are moving into all the small towns on the South Shore of MA and the growth is causing them to put housing near the gun clubs. Now please note that most of these gun clubs have been here since the early 1900’s. Scituate is something like 1929.
The writer thinks that the gun clubs should have to shut down or be limited due to the new homes. . . .
When did America turn into this crap? What the hell is this guy thinking? I don’t understand how the left can think they have the right to move into my town and tell me that my gun club that has been here for 80 year needs to close because they don’t feel safe. Are you kidding me? You are the new guy in town, shut up and deal.
Folks, if you move into town then you deal with the gun club. If you don’t feel safe with me shooting at the range near by they don’t buy that house. No one made you move into my town, and if you want to cause problems go do it someplace else. If you didn’t know about the club when you moved in that is not my problem - it is yours, do your homework on the next house and good luck selling this one.
If you really think this is a safety issue than the town should change the zoning and not allow you to build down range of the club. The town should not in any way have the right to close or change the way the club runs.
It makes me sick that we have a generation of morons who FEEL they have the right to screw with me and my life because they want to. They move into town and all of a sudden we need to change the way we do things to fit the NEW person? I don’t think so. You move into my town you change the way you live to fit in here, we are not changing to fit you. Don’t like it then move back to where you came from.
Seems this is a major immigration problem and not just with the folks from outside our country. A simple reminder then – you are the outsider who wants to become part of US, we don’t want to become like you. If we did we would move to where you came from . . . . Since you came here it is up to you to conform to the way we do things. Deal with it or move – it is still a free country for now. . .
